HEPATIC TANAGER Piranga flava

The HEPATIC TANAGER is a scarce and local breeder in isolated mountain ranges of southeastern California. Otherwise it is a fall or winter vagrant toward the coast or scattered at desert oases; almost all records are from southern California.

Most of my California records are listed below. Those preceded by H were found or co-found by me personally; those preceded by K receive some partial credit (e.g., I was involved in sorting out i.d. of a previously discovered bird or refound a vagrant that had been thought to have left). These are my personal Hepatic Tanager records:

5/17/75 Clark Mt. SBE pair [breeding locale]
1/4/77 Oceanside SD female that wintered
5/21/77 Clark Mt. SBE singing male [breeding locale]
5/28/77 New York Mts. SBE singing male heard only [breeding locale]
H10/23/88 Furnace Creek INY female; typed description & sketch (shown above)
