ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD juvenal female [see below]
Identification as Allen's Hummingbird based on Pyle (1997) Identification Guide to North American Birds, Part I.
These features can be seen in the rectrices:
1) R1 has a rufous base, broad green suberterimal band, and broad black tip
[rufous base hidden by uppertail coverts in this shot but shown in other photos of same bird],
2) R2 appears to lack any obvious cut-out notch in the shape of the tip of the feather, and
3) R5 has tiny white notch along vane pointed back toward rump.
Throat pattern (see in other shots) appears to show a juvenal bird; bill appears corrugated (also suggesting HY).
Conclusion: juv female Allen's based on plumage and bill. Given that age/sex, the width of R5 appears to be consistent with the identification.
Finally, the date of 11 June 1005 supports Allen's. The only June records of Rufous in MTY have been adult male, possibly early migrants, with the first record of HY birds after mid-July.
