GRAY CATBIRD Dumetella carolinensis
13 June 1996 at Big Sur R. mouth MTY
The GRAY CATBIRD is a semi-regular spring & fall vagrant to California. There are a handful of summer or winter records. It averages only about 4 birds a year so as been a reviewed species for some time although it breeds as close as northeast Oregon.

All of my California records are listed below. Those preceded by Hwere found or co-found by me personally; those preceded by K receive some partial credit (e.g., I was involved in sorting out i.d. of a previously discovered bird or refound a vagrant that had been thought to have left). As with many eastern vagrants, many more were seen during active rarity chasing throughout the state in younger days, and a higher percentage of records are from my local county (MTY) in recent years. These are my personal Gray Catbird records:

6/1/74    Deep Springs INY
5/30/75    Oasis MNO
10/17/76    Pt. Loma SD    description in my notes; a mob of us were standing around when Stallcup found this bird right behind us
5/26/77    Scottys Castle INY     description in my notes
10/22/88    Furnace Creek INY     typed description & sketch
1/6/91    Pajaro Dunes SCZ     description in my notes; wintered here
1/31/93    Orick HUM    typed description & sketch
6/13/96    Big Sur R. mouth MTY    a bird banded by BSOL (the first of 3 here this summer); I photographed it in-hand and then followed it for 20 minutes after its release; details in my notes
H 6/17/96    Big Sur R. mouth MTY     a singing male later banded by BSOL; this was the 2d bird banded there this June. S. F. Bailey & I were chasing bird #1 and thought we had refound it but it proved to be bird #2 so we actually “found” this one. Typed description
6/7-10/97 Carmel R. mouth MTY singing male; sketch & typed description
H 8/16-17/01    Lewiston Lake TRI     Rita Carratello & I discovered this one; details & sketch in my notes [reproduced below]
