SCARLET TANAGER Piranga olivacea
2 Nov 2003 at Big Sur R. mouth MTY
The SCARLET TANAGER is a rare vagrant to California. Almost all of the records are of fall vagrants along the coast, mostly in October and the vast majority in southern California; there are just a handful of records of spring vagrants or possible summerers.

Most of my California records are listed below. Those preceded by H were found or co-found by me personally; those preceded by K receive some partial credit (e.g., I was involved in sorting out i.d. of a previously discovered bird or refound a vagrant that had been thought to have left). These are my personal Scarlet Tanager records:

9/19/77 Goleta SBA imm female; description in my notes
10/17/77 Pt. Loma SD imm male: description in my notes
10/14/01 Laguna Grande park MTY imm. male; description in my notes
10/14/87 Carmel R. mouth MTY imm. male; description in my notes
11/2/03 Big Sur R. mouth MTY imm. female; description in notes & photos (one shown above)
